Well. I might have gotten an extra hour of sleep, if Loud Dog cared anything about the end of Daylight Savings Time.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 06:25
Folks starting to get the hang of #Mastodon? Instances and federation sounding a tiny bit less intimidating? Excellent. Excellent good.
So when do we tell them about the rest of the #Fediverse?
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 06:29
@olyerickson Oh that would be lovely wouldn’t it?
The glitch-soc friendly fork of Mastodon supports Markdown. Some of their other features got pulled in upstream. Hopefully that one does too someday.

Current mood: the neighbor children are louder than Loud Dog.
I suppose I could let her out in our backyard to test that hypothesis, but I’d hate to traumatize them.
That’s what I keep telling myself anyways.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 10:27
It probably defeats the purpose to play “soothing focus music playlist” uncomfortably loud but it’s either that or start shouting at the neighborhood to STFU, like some loud-ass grumpy old man.
I am a grumpy old man. But I prefer to remain a quiet one.

@ChrisJohnRiley @waterbear @mauvehed Silencing works well for the borderline cases, like mastodon.social and other huge servers.
Instances run by admins who spite-block other instances tend to go dark pretty quick, since that’s rarely their only issue.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 10:40
@freakazoid @chris I wish Pop updates were less fraught for my machine. Been mostly on Arch-based EndeavourOS this year, because things just go wibbly-wobbly less often.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 10:42
One of the cats was sitting on the windowsill and softly growling in the direction of the neighbor kids for about five minutes before going back under the bed.
So at least I know it’s not just me.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 13:15
@freakazoid @chris It’s mostly fine. But when it isn’t it really really isn’t, and usually at the most inopportune time.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 14:34
Very slowly getting more comfortable with conda.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 15:28
@aurynn that was some good thinking!
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 16:21
@jamie @jgillich@mastodon.social @b0rk@mastodon.social seriously sounds awesome. The issue — as always — is time management and executive dysfunction.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 16:24
oh dang i forgot again
Note to self and others. When you’re replying to a thread, the other handles are right there. Decide if they all need or want to be in on your part of the conversation. If not, just backspace them out. No extra clicks needed. Like how Twitter used to be. #nobirb

@thegibson bad news, boss. It’s only Sunday. 👁️
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 16:53
@thegibson Needed the reminder. Contributed. Thank you!
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 17:12
@thegibson It’s cool. They’re with the band. 👁️

I guess a very neurodivergent moment hearing a friend’s relationship update where they still haven’t said “the L word” and a) they didn’t mean the show and b) I’m gonna say it in five minutes or never.
When you know you know. You might be wrong but you know.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 19:34
Gonna understand Boto3 if I have to rich.inspect() every damn return value.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 20:15
Big population spike in the Fediverse and I don’t know everybody. By the odds, most will be great but a few won’t. I’ll switch on the “Hide your social graph” setting so getting at my friends is a little harder.

hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 20:39
@recordedparadox oh there are so many. Mastodon is one of the more accessible options. But that site’s a good resource if you ever get itchy and curious.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 20:42
@shoq Ask again in a few months. This is still the shock of the new. We’ve had disgruntled Twitter waves before (I was part of one okay maybe two), so there are conventions in place.
But the scale is something else! Even if it follows the common flow of most going back elsewhere, there’s enough that those who stay will have a noticeable effect.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 20:59
I already had a good philosophical thread so I’ll bump that.
It’s something seeing big Twitter folks posting from their new Mastodon accounts, including non-tech folks I would never expect.
I think it’s good. Just weird to see them hanging out in our coffee shop.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 21:03
@recordedparadox well the nice thing with federated networks in particular is you don’t have to migrate if you don’t want to. You can set up accounts, check out other instances, other services. See how it feels different from the one you’re on now, and decide if you like it better.
Or don’t! Get a whole social platform polycule.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 21:47
Well this is not great. My desktop PC froze, so I did a hard reset, and now it no longer powers up. Not so much as a POST.
Power brick? Mother board? Dunno yet.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 21:56
@ocdtrekkie @nomad the two most recent upgrades were my video card and my power supply. Still have the old ones for both if needed but ugh.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 22:20
@rekiwi upgraded power supply recently and since I’m no pro I wouldn’t be surprised if I screwed something up. Would’ve expected it to catch me sooner but could be a slow burn screwup.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 22:21
@jamie I was told there wouldn’t be a test today. I didn’t even read the chapter!
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 22:35
@jamie well you’re gonna need a new pen the last person who edited the permanent record stole mine!
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 23:27
You ever have a fix which — though quick to resolve, is just tremendously dissatisfying?
Connector from power supply to motherboard came loose. I don’t know, maybe the fan went into overdriving playing Satisfactory or loading TweetDeck & shook it out. Fixed I think.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 23:29
@ocdtrekkie Oh I’m familiar with that one. USB’s another frequent jiggle-fix on various devices. But power. Sheesh. When that’s in, it’s supposed to stay in.
hackers.town: 2022-11-06 Sun 23:36
@maddiefuzz make a burner on mastodon.social!
