Playing soothing music uncomfortably loud so as to hear less background chitchat because even playful banter registers as “loud argument” and triggers a couple ancient but still-running trauma responses.

All I can really say about Cohost is how bad I wanted it to be more of a solid service and less of a noble cause.

@zkat I was so excited for Cohost I gave them money for a year membership. But at the end of that year I was way less sure they understood what they were in.
Part of why a few minutes back I wished they’d put more effort into the business than the cause was — well — people are damn cruel. You need a layer of “just business” for when they tear in like hyenas on a day-old pizza.

@zkat yeah, that wasn’t the right phrasing and I’m still searching around in my head for a better one. I was honestly more thinking about the mental health aspects than financial health. Less personal investment? Something?
On the actual business side I wish they had those skills and more people putting money in, sure.
But whenever I feel the urge to get snarky about some passion project social network platform I remember Diaspora and Ilya Zhitomirskiy. That usually cools me off some and changes my focus dramatically.

@m the mix of enjoyment and reasonable competence. I’ve got an immediate example of my younger brother, who got hit even harder than me by the ADHD hammer, and thus didn’t have enough focus to really make it past basic HTML. He’s mostly remained housed, but that’s about it.

@qlp a couple sentences per slide isn’t unusual with a @genehack talk. Dude can do a ten minute lightning talk and use 30 slides.
And it works great for the pace and rhythm of his talks.

@m I don’t have much more. Mom raised me, Dad raised him. We’ve chatted a few times over the years, but it’s always been a little frustrating. Can’t hold menial jobs, on state disability, in an unhealthy relationship.
And enough similarities that it’s a bad funhouse mirror experience. Basically Mom had a better instinct for teaching coping skills than Dad.

@m the wild part for me is that he got the earlier diagnosis and treatment such as it is (dunno when but well into adulthood). With me, Mom didn’t believe in ADHD or autism because that’s just how everyone is in the family.
She has worked out that math by now.
But because that’s how everyone in the family is, there was loads of lore and advice for how our tree can cope in the mundane world.
Dad’s side is more autism-heavy and not the chatty auDHD storytellers of Mom’s side, so no lore. Most everyone flying blind.

@m the other part is remembering that the family will be walking its own journey of discovery, near but not the same as yours.
When Mom started softening on autism & ADHD, she mentioned many of the men in the family had been diagnosed with Asperger’s. I gently told her “aspy is the Nazi name for autistic-but-employable”

@jack I like composable documentation, well-organized enough that I can read it as one big doc or split it into digestible chunks for a reference tool or PKM.
