Team-building competitive elimination exercise.

First round, I warn my opponent I have social anxiety in force and will play to lose.

“Me too.”

I won.

Which is to say, I successfully eliminated myself in the first round.

Offered “good game” condolences to my opponent, who took a couple more rounds to eliminate themselves.

Doing a little pre-event-day-events tweaking of my Emacs config, as one does. Get org-roam dailies in org-agenda, ensure visual-line-mode is enabled.

org-roam hasn’t been my primary, but even with my chunky config Emacs uses roughly 1/3 the CPU of the most efficient Electron-based tool I have installed. That makes it an excellent choice for note capture while on battery.

@mhoye I — you mean — maybe — I’m good?

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 06:59

Puttered too much on the laptop which let’s be honest that’s what I’d rather be doing than any large gathering.

Nearly missed breakfast.

Got to breakfast and the no doubt very expensive options had a Best Western continental breakfast feel. Missing breakfast? Very “wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it Bob” territory.

I enjoyed a couple pieces of fresh fruit though.

@mhoye wild.

Work event MC said to make sure we met somebody new during lunch.

So I went to the food truck down the street, got a burger, and hung out with the construction workers.

@c0debabe no idea what I did, but thank you! I appreciate you too!

Subject: public bench

Aesthetic: quaint hostile architecture

A park bench with wood slats and metal armrests, exactly wide enough to fit one average adult with excellent posture

They’ve got beer set out!

(sees nothing but Bud and Bud Light)

ah, no they don’t. My mistake.

i am such a cliche

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 14:05

Oh I missed that they also have Coors.

Still no beer though.

@IamMrsGeek @magni @mcgrew yeah I learned a lot of times it’s not AI, but super-strict filtering on ATS (applicant tracking service), and borderline fraudulent job postings that are there to tick the box on some internal metric.

Vague-toot that it’s okay to be happy for a thing that excites other folks even if it moves you not at all.

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 16:02

@laescude exactly! Like I’m thrilled for some folks, maybe even more honestly thrilled for them directly because I have no personal investment. I’m just happy to see their smiles.

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 16:30

Tried three times to make my legs move in the same direction as my 750 — or so — coworkers and I just could not do it. That is too much people after a full day of too much people.

“I moved to Tucson from Seattle in June and I have been absolutely miserable. Except for summer when there’s monsoon season: constant lightning storms, torrential rain, flash floods, it’s awesome! you’re in the desert and it’s hot but also muggy. Don’t like that. But everything is green and it’s gorgeous! Oh and you hear about the scorpions and rattlesnakes, but really look out for javelinas: North American peccaries. Look like pigs, fill same ecological role as pigs, but not pigs. They knock over your garbage and get mean if you startle them.”

#Tucson tourism department should hire me.

And honestly I can’t infodump that much that fast about a place if I’m not enjoying it. #Tucson

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 17:06

Well okay maybe I can hang out for a minute.

A very small glass of very dark beer

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 17:39

Every time I walk past someone walking the dog a low whisper rolls from my lips, like a hot breeze scraping across rocks.

“PUPPY”

@IamMrsGeek is a terrible influence

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 17:47

Yep I lasted exactly long enough to drink my drink and eat my prepaid food. Sort of talked to a couple people.

Then my system promptly sent me on my way.

hackers.town: 2024-09-30 Mon 18:38

@bitprophet Dragon’s Milk Stout from New Holland. Very tasty!

The place had a pretty big beer selection.. I just picked a random option from the stouts category.

@britown Thank you! My crabbiness is mostly play. I’ve enjoyed Tucson more and more as I get acclimatized.
